The Mother Lode is rich in history of the gold rush era. As you travel into the mountains, you enjoy the beauty of El Dorado National forest and Desolation Wilderness which offer an abundance of outdoor recreational activities.
El Dorado County offers a wide variety of places to go and things to do. On your drive along highway 50 you can enjoy the view of horse tail falls. This stream originates in Desolation wilderness where there is hiking and backpacking in a beautiful granite filled basin. You will also enjoy the view of Pyramid Peak and several other peaks that line the crystal range. They offer fairly strenuous hikes, for those interested in more adventurous activities. Highway 50 follows the American river for much of its route toward Lake Tahoe; there are several rafting outfitters offering single or multiple day white water adventures.
In the foot hills there is the Apple Hill area, known for its wide variety of apples; it also has berry and Christmas tree farms, and numerous vineyards. The town of Placerville has several art galleries including the Thomas Kinkade gallery; there are restaurants, boutiques, and antique shops; many located in historic buildings.
Gold Bug Park and Mine is located in Placerville. You can explore the mine, learn about the history of hard rock quartz mining, or enjoy a picnic in the park. Nearby on highway 49 is the town of Coloma, where gold was discovered in 1848 leading to the California Gold rush. |
